Work on one of these problems

We are hiring the first people across the five domains and their companies. Each role is tied to problems on our research agenda, and most of the work happens in Atlanta, near the sites, crews and hardware it depends on.

01 · Problems and roles

Eleven founding roles work on twelve open problems

Every role works on at least one problem, and most problems need several roles. The dots beside each problem mark the domains that need it. Point at a name to see its links.

02 · Open roles

Every role here is a founding role

Choose a role and the form below opens with it selected. If the right role is not here, apply anyway and tell us which problem you would take on.

01 · Hardware and firmware

  • Founding hardware engineer

    Current · Flow · Relay · Atlanta

Take the Current Hub, Flow Node and Relay Node from first prototype to designs a contract manufacturer can build by the thousand. You own the power design, the sensing, the enclosure and the test fixtures, and you choose parts by their rated life at temperature.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Write the requirements for the Current Hub, Flow Node and Relay Node from site visits with 4 Seasons crews.
    2. 2.Choose the architecture and main parts for the first device, rated for the heat of a Georgia garage.
    3. 3.Build its first prototype. None of the three devices has one yet.

In a year or two · Three devices in houses that you would be comfortable leaving there for fifteen years.

    Apply
  • Embedded firmware engineer

    Current · Flow · Relay · Atlanta

Write the code that closes a valve, sheds a load or switches networks with no internet connection. You build the update path: signed images, two partitions and a rollback that works every time, on devices nobody can reach.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Choose the microcontroller and radio stack with the hardware engineer. There is no prototype to inherit.
    2. 2.Bring up a development board with secure boot and two firmware partitions.
    3. 3.Show an update that fails halfway through and rolls back on its own.

In a year or two · A fleet that updates itself weekly without a single house losing a function it had before.

    Apply
  • Manufacturing and test engineer

    Studio · Atlanta

Bring up the first production runs with a contract manufacturer. You design end-of-line test and burn-in, give every unit a serial number and a history, and decide from yield data when a design is ready to ship.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Write the end-of-line test plan for the first device while its prototype is being designed.
    2. 2.Shortlist contract manufacturers and visit the two best.
    3. 3.Define the serial number and the test record that every unit will carry.

In a year or two · A line where a bad component lot is caught at the factory, not in a customer's garage.

    Apply

02 · Software

  • Founding engineer, Groundwork

    Groundwork · Atlanta

Take over the software 4 Seasons runs on today (TypeScript, Postgres, Next.js, an Expo crew app) and extend it into the operating layer for every company. You decide the data model that everything else in the studio will be written against.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Read the codebase and ship to production in your first two weeks.
    2. 2.Write the plan for the house record: what it stores, who writes to it, and how each entry says where it came from.
    3. 3.Add devices to the data model beside jobs, crews and steps, so an install is scheduled like any other job.

In a year or two · Software that schedules a 4 Seasons job and a Flow Node install with the same code, and a site record people trust.

    Apply
  • Machine learning engineer, field operations

    Groundwork · 4 Seasons · Atlanta

Train models that turn photos, video and readings from a job site into a scope, a price and a check that the work was done right. You start from the instant quote code that runs today, and your training data is every job 4 Seasons finishes, labeled by what the crew found and what it cost.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Measure today's instant quotes: how far each quote lands from the final cost, by task.
    2. 2.Build a labeled set from finished jobs: the photos, what the crew found and what the work cost.
    3. 3.Ship one change that narrows that error, and show the before and after.

In a year or two · Quotes from a phone video that crews accept without a site visit, with an error you can state.

    Apply
  • Device fleet engineer

    Groundwork · Atlanta

Provisioning, monitoring and staged rollouts for every device in the field. You write the rules that turn a pressure trace or a dropped connection into a crew visit before the homeowner notices anything.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Design provisioning: how a unit gets its identity at the factory and its address at the install.
    2. 2.Write the first alert rules, each tied to the crew action it starts.
    3. 3.Build the fleet view against a simulated fleet until real units exist.

In a year or two · A fleet dashboard where every alert leads to an action and no failure goes unexplained.

    Apply

03 · Field operations and supply

  • Field operations lead

    4 Seasons · Atlanta

Build and run the crews that install and service every device. You write the procedures, set the quality checks, plan the routes and define what a finished job looks like, then measure it on every job.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Ride with 4 Seasons crews and time every step of a renovation.
    2. 2.Write the install procedure for the first device, with the photos each step needs.
    3. 3.Plan how each install visit gets a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician.

In a year or two · Three devices installed in one visit in under half a day, by crews you trained.

    Apply
  • Supply chain lead

    Studio · Atlanta

Parts, kits and inventory for thousands of jobs, from the contract manufacturer to the back of each truck. You plan stock against the dispatch schedule so a crew never drives back for a part.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Map how a job's bill of materials becomes purchase orders and a staged kit today.
    2. 2.Find the parts crews drive back for, from job records, and remove the top causes.
    3. 3.Price the first device's bill of materials at 100, 1,000 and 10,000 units.

In a year or two · Kits packed the night before for every job on the next day's schedule.

    Apply

04 · Partnerships

  • Utility and insurance partnerships

    Current · Flow · Atlanta

Work with utilities on demand response and with insurers on water damage. You need to know how those organizations decide, what evidence they require and how long it takes, and you shape our measurement so it meets that bar.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.List the Georgia utility programs and the insurers that pay for load control or leak shutoff, with the evidence each one requires.
    2. 2.Meet the people who run three of them.
    3. 3.Write the measurement method each would accept, before any device is installed.

In a year or two · The first program where a utility or an insurer pays on a number our devices measured.

    Apply
  • Carrier partnerships

    Relay · Atlanta

Agreements with cellular carriers, fiber and cable providers and satellite networks, so one Relay Node can use all of them. You negotiate terms that work for a device that switches networks on its own.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Map the ways Relay could hold a phone number on its own account: carrier agreements or an MVNO arrangement.
    2. 2.Talk with carriers, MVNO enablers and satellite operators about terms for a device that switches networks.
    3. 3.Write the plan and its cost for the first 100 homes.

In a year or two · Every Relay Node with at least two independent paths out of the house.

    Apply

05 · Founders in residence

  • Founder in residence

Studio · any domain · Atlanta

Start a domain's next company, such as construction robotics, distributed generation or water purification. None of these is built yet. You start from 4 Seasons crews and the software we have written, and you pick the first product.

    First 90 days

    1. 1.Spend your first weeks on 4 Seasons job sites and in the software.
    2. 2.Pick the domain and the first product, and show the numbers behind the choice.
    3. 3.Build or source the first test unit and price it.

In a year or two · A new company in one of the five domains, with its first product working in the field.

    Apply
